Who is Nick Szabo: The Father of Smart Contracts and Digital Currencies

Often referred as “father of smart contracts” and widely known in the blockchain and digital currencies field, Nick Szabo is a legal scholar, cryptographer and computer scientist, pioneer of the concept of self-executing contracts that can automatically execute without any intermediary (Smart contracts).

Introduction

Born in the United States in 1965 and raised in California, Szabo attended the University of Washington, where he earned a degree in law and a degree in computer science. Later in Berkeley he received a PhD in computer science from University of California.

Nick Szabo made significant contributions to several fields, including law, economics, computer science and cryptography. Numerous articles and papers were published by Szabo on these topics, including the seminal article “Smart Contracts: Building Blocks for Digital Markets” in 1996.

The Concept of Smart Contracts

The article introduces the concept of smart contracts, a self-executing contract that allows trustless and transparent transactions without an intermediary, by having the terms of the agreement between seller and buyer directly written into the code. The agreements embedded into the code exist on a decentralized blockchain network, which allow transparency and automation for the execution of these contracts.

Contribution to Blockchain Technology

Szabo’s concept of smart contracts provided the groundwork for the development of blockchain technology. This technological advancement has now become a significant industry and has a broad range of applications in fields such as finance and supply chain management.

Although the concept of smart contracts was first proposed in 1994 by Szabo, it was not until blockchain technology was popularized by Bitcoin, and the creation of Ethereum in 2015 that this concept became a practical implementation. Today developers are able to program smart contracts and deploy them to Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Avalanche, Polygon and many others layer 1 and layer 2 blockchains, making them self-executing and immutable.

Significant contributions were also made by Szabo in the digital currencies field. He created “Bit Gold” in 1998, a forerunner of Bitcoin, which was intended to serve as a decentralized digital currency that employs cryptographic algorithms to protect transactions against double-spending.

While Bit Gold did not gain significant traction, it had an influential role in the concept of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Nowadays, Szabo is considered a prominent figure in the realm of blockchain technology and digital currencies.
